We are trying to showcase some of the amazing drivers we get to work with week in and week out and as the season wears on we want to talk to them to see how their season is going. This season BT Racing which has dominated the Bone Stock division at Delaware Speedway the past three seasons winning three consecutive titles has now made the jump to run a in house car in the APC Series with the 2022 Bone Stock Champion and the 2020 APC Series Champion Jo Lawrence piloting the entry. We got to sit down and talk to both Kris Lawrence as well as Jo Lawrence to discuss their 2023 season and how not only is their APC Late Model season is going but as well as their bone stock program.
We talked to Kris first about how he felt with his bone stock program. "I have never been happier with my racing program which is weird because I'm not racing anything full time". With Kris not running a full time ride in 2023, Kris has been very busy in the shop as compared to other seasons this year the cars have been getting a little banged up more than usual so Kris and his team have been repairing the cars and getting his fleet ready for weekly competition. With already over 20 drivers, Kris is on pace to have over 30 different drivers in his cars this season. Kris has also prepared a car to run full-time at Flamboro Speedway with Wayde Thorne and Phil Givens to chase a pure stock championship at the track. " We will see how we stack up in September but I know with those guys at flammy all season, the other drivers have support in the pits and great drivers to talk racing with. Those guys do a great job representing what BT Racing is trying to do for pure stocks and I'm happy to have them on the team".
Before we let Kris go we had to have him talk about working with his rookies in Justin Collver and Jessy Howard and how he is helping them get better. " Every driver I have worked with is different and it takes me a little time to adjust so we understand eachother. The strange thing I have found with teaching others is that you are trying to explain a feeling. Drivers adjust their style and car based on how it feels from the seat. So driving line, gas and brake points only go so far. After that the driver has to feel when the car is at its limit and where is needs more". One of the things BT Racing is doing is helping drivers each week during Monday night practices at Delaware Speedway, Kris takes the time to teach his rookie drivers in Jessy and Justin as well as drivers who are renting one of Kris's rental cars. " I try and give every new driver the same lessons and after that I encourage specific questions to help with whatever they are working on that week. The Monday practice days are worthwhile for any driver and allows for more laps and a lot more one on one".
We got a chance to sit down with the driver of the #78 Great Lakes Concrete Chevrolet Camaro Pro Late Model Jo Lawrence to discuss his success early on in the United Racing APC Late Model Series. After sitting out for majority of the '22 season from pro late model competition only making a couple starts. We wanted to know how it feels to be back full time in a pro late model race. " So far it feels great to be back it’s such a competitive field and I do enjoy the longer length races". Says Jo. After racing pro late models on a regular basis over the past couple of seasons Jo would return to his bone stock roots in 2022, ending the season with 7 wins and ending up hoisting the championship. For Jo, returning to bone stocks was a "blast", " The bone stocks are a different kind of racing".
With 9 races across 5 different tracks, Jo has been a consistent face at the front early on this year. With two events at Delaware and Sauble still to go as well as one more trip each to Sunset and Flamboro. With Jo not finishing worse than 4th place and sitting second in points 4 points back of Danny Benedict, Jo has shown why he is a premier face in the APC Series. With a number of solid races left Jo has a chance to take this team to victory lane. Jo is feeling confident about the remaining races left on the schedule and feels Sauble is one he has circled as the one he would like to win. Next race up for Jo is the Canada Day APC Series at Delaware Speedway where he will battle for 100 laps on GForceTV. Jo said, "My goal is to always win! But most importantly have fun doing it. The guys and girls I’m working with along with the amazing support we have is really making this year a ton of fun so far".
