We sat down with the driver of the #16 Mike Thomson to discuss his season to date and what we can expect heading into the final weeks of the season. Currently Mike sits atop the Mini Stock points championship at Flamboro Speedway. The #16 has visited Victory Lane 11 times already in 2023 and with only a couple races left in the season Thomson is looking to continue his winning ways.
When asked about how his season is going Mike has this to say. "If you said at the beginning of the year that we would have 11 wins and leading the points. I would say we met some personal goals and surpassed them". Earlier this season Mike was told that if you go out and win, they can't catch you. That has been the mindset leading into the final weeks of the season. In July, Mike took his #16 Ford Mustang up to Sauble Speedway for their Mini Stock Invitational. " I had a fantastic time at Sauble Speedway, qualified mid-pack and ended the night with a Top-5".
It hasn't been all smiles in the TBR Stable as on August 5th in the first feature Mike would wreck hard into the outside wall with the front end. Once the car came back to the pits the team went to work and got #16 repaired enough for feature #2. Mike then went out and picked up the checkered flag. Showing the resilience and no quit attitude from the team. During the 2023 season, Mike made the trip to Sunset Speedway to prepare for the Allan Lankin Memorial Cup that ran during Labour Day Weekend. During the first visit the team struggled with setup but still managed a 7th place finish. "We gathered so great information and we will use what we learned for the Lankin Memorial". On September 3rd, the TBR team headed back to Sunset to compete in the Allan Lankin Memorial Cup. Overall Mike would finish the day with a 10th place finish.
To finish off the season Mike and the TBR team is looking to finish off the season strong with three races to go to decide the mini stock championship. You can watch Mike in action during at Flamboro Speedway to close out the season on September 23rd before the TBR Mustang turns to playoff action competing in Frostoberfest and making his first appearance at Peterborough Speedways famed Autumn Colour Classic. "I went up there to help last year and I said I was coming back with the car" said Thomson.
